"Fight or Flight" Performed by
Helen Husak
This investigation of the idea of multiple cultural
identities navigates with whimsy through emotional seas and ignites the
question: where is the state of equilibrium, or ‘home’, and will we ever
get there? Helen Husak is an independent contemporary dance artist
living and working in Calgary, Alberta, and a recipient of both the 2008
Enbridge Emerging Artist Award, and the 2010 Lieutenant Governor of
Alberta Emerging Artist Award, Over the past decade, Helen has expanded
her craft through numerous self- directed residencies as well as
residencies housed by Calgary’s Dancers’ Studio West, Banff Centre for
the Arts, Ottawa’s Le Groupe Dance Lab and Tedd Robinson’s La B.A.R.N.
in Quebec. She has studied across Canada, in the United States and in
Europe, and counts Tonya Lockyer, Davida Monk, Peter Boneham, Tedd
Robinson, Susie Burpee, and Sasha Ivanochko as influential to her
practice. Known for her unique solo performance repertoire Helen has
performed her work in local and national festivals, including the Canada
Dance Festival at the National Arts Centre. Currently Helen is
co-director of the Calgary Contemporary Dance Collective, a non-profit
organization that addresses the training and professional development
needs of Calgary’s local dance artists.
